We've changed our name!!!

In case you hadn't heard, we've changed our name to the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science . We did this for a number of reasons. First, over the past two decades the study of climate (including climate dynamics, paleoclimate, climate change etc.) has grown tremendously. As a result, the research and teaching interests of our faculty, and the interests of today's students are often more "climate oriented", as opposed to "weather oriented". Second, a large number of today's students are concerned about climate change. Along with the name change, we are introducing a new degree track, the BS Meteorology, Concentration in Climate Science. See the next news story for more details on this! Finally, we believe that the combined name change and new track will attract more students into our department - an important consideration given the huge budget cuts we're been experiencing, and implied threats to small programs in the CSU.

For you "traditionalists", the original BS Meteorology degree is still in place, and we continue to produce graduates with very solid backgrounds in both theoretical and applied topics. Our forecasting program continues to be very strong, and we are rebuilding our applied program via the Instruments class (MET 163), with a new faculty member (Professor Craig Clements), new instrumentation, and field trips. Last summer, we operated our first "field trip class", taking 10 students (undergraduates and graduates) and three faculty members to northern Arizona to study (forecast, measure and analyze) convection associated with the monsoon.

Stay tuned to our "news page" for more exciting developments!
